College of Health & Human Services

Visit the College of Health & Human Services web site

The college is comprised of six schools: Health Sciences; Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences; Human and Consumer Sciences; Nursing; Physical Therapy; and Recreation and Sport Sciences. Many of the college's programs are accredited by their respective agencies and some are recognized as leaders nationwide.

Health and Human Services students make a difference on campus and in the surrounding community while gaining experience by working for on-campus clinics and recreation facilities and in community outreach programs. The college operates several experiential facilities, including a hearing, speech, language and physical therapy clinic; the Child Development Center; the Atrium Café; WellWorks—the University’s employee wellness program; and campus recreation facilities that include an indoor pool, an ice arena, a golf course, a tennis center and Ping Student Recreation Center. All of these facilities serve a dual purpose: to provide public services to the community and campus while providing educational opportunities for our students. In many cases, students can receive academic internship credit for applying what they learn while working in these facilities.

All of the college’s facilities, both experiential and classroom, are state-of-the-art. Most of the classes within the college majors are held in Grover Center, which opened in 2001 and includes technology in every classroom for instructor and student use.

Our Distinctions
Recently 100% of the students in the dietetics program were matched to a post-graduation internship; the nationwide average is less than 75%. Twice in the past three years faculty from that program have been recognized with the American Dietetics Association Outstanding Dietetics Educator Award. The industrial hygiene (IH) program is one of only four accredited undergraduate IH programs in the country. The hearing-speech-language program is rated among the top 10% of such programs in the nation and as the top one in Ohio. The college introduced the first graduate level sports administration program in the country over 25 years ago--still considered one of the best in the world--and today the undergraduate sport industry program benefits from the strong connections with the alumni of that premier program. Many of those alumni hold leadership positions in professional sports and entertainment.

Degrees
Upon completion of a program of study within the college, you will be awarded the appropriate Bachelor of Science or Associate degree. Bachelor's degrees are awarded in the following areas: athletic training; environmental health; health; hearing, speech and language sciences; human and consumer sciences; industrial hygiene; nursing; physical education; recreation studies; and recreation and sport sciences. An associate's degree can be earned in child development. All programs leading to teacher licensure are approved by the Ohio Department of Education. Masters and doctoral level programs of study are available in select areas.

Special Admission Requirements
Admission to the School of Nursing baccalaureate nursing program is restricted to registered nurses. The following programs admit students as pre-majors and beginning students must meet certain criteria in order to be admitted directly into the major: Athletic Training Education, Physical Education, and Sport Industry. In addition, the Athletic Training program limits openings in the major. Students enrolled in Interior Architecture complete a portfolio review, typically at the completion of the fall quarter in the second year, to determine eligibility to continue in the program. Students planning to enter teacher education programs should refer to the College of Education for requirements for admission and progression in teacher education.

Physical Therapy
The School of Physical Therapy offers an entry-level doctoral program in physical therapy leading to the Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) degree. Applicants must possess a baccalaureate degree, which may be in any discipline as long as the prerequisites are met. Pre-physical therapy programs that prepare students for graduate study are offered by the departments of Biological Sciences and Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences, and the exercise physiology program offered by the School of Recreation and Sport Sciences in the College of Health and Human Services.
