TRANSFER CREDIT
How does Ohio University award credit?
Please see the Transferring Credits section for complete details on transferring credit to Ohio University. Then the college in which you major will determine how this credit will be matched to Ohio University courses and count toward graduation requirements. Credit is only awarded for courses in which a final grade is recorded. Semester hours are multiplied by 1.5 to yield quarter hours.
When will I know how my classes equated to Ohio University courses?
Approximately two weeks after you receive your admission letter, you will receive a credit transfer report which lists all the courses which have transferred. If the course has already been matched to Ohio University classes, that information will appear on the report as well. If it hasn't yet been evaluated, the college you have been admitted to will review the course content and send you updated information as appropriate.
FINANCIAL AID & SCHOLARSHIPS
Need-Based Financial Aid
You need to add Ohio University's school code of 003100 to your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can do this by sending the Financial Aid Office the first page of your Student Aid Report (SAR) with a note saying "Add Ohio University". You can also call the Central Processing Systems (CPS) at 1-800-433-3243 and add our school code over the phone. The Financial Aid Office will not be able to process the results of your FAFSA until you have been admitted to Ohio University. Once your application for admission has been approved, they will begin the process of determining your financial aid eligibility. In addition to your personal and family circumstances, the amount of financial aid you received at your previous college or university will be considered in this process.
Scholarships
Ohio University offers the Ohio Transfer Scholarship every fall for qualifying admitted students. To view the scholarship eligibility requirements please visit the Ohio Transfer Scholarship web site.
Even if you do not receive a scholarship in your first year, once you have completed a year's worth of credit at Ohio University you may be eligible to apply for "upper-class" merit scholarships which would be based on your performance here.
HOUSING
Do I have to live on campus?
If you have completed less than 90 quarter hours (60 semester hours) of transferable course work, you will be required to live on campus unless you meet one of the following exemption criteria:
- Special/medical conditions
- You live within 50 miles of campus and intend to commute
- You are married
- You are a veteran with 18 months of active duty
- Part-time student carrying 11 credit hours or less
- You are 23 or older
Is on-campus housing guaranteed?
If you are required to live on-campus and return your contract by the specified due date, the University will provide you with accommodations. However, if you are not required to live on-campus, then on-campus housing is offered on a space-available basis and is not guaranteed.
When will I receive my housing contract?
Students are sent housing contract information in a book called Connect OHIO after they have been admitted to Ohio University. Beginning in early February, Connect OHIO is sent out on a weekly basis to accepted students. While the freshmen deadline to return the housing contract and $200 deposit is May 1, any transfer student who receives a contract after this date will have 12 to 15 business days to return the contract and deposit to the housing office.
If you are planning to attend Ohio University this fall, you will need to complete the online housing contract and submit it electronically with a $200 deposit. If you do not have internet access, you should complete the housing contract/worksheet and submit it along with your deposit to the Housing Office.
Housing deposits and contracts for all students must be received by August 1 for the fall quarter. You may still receive on-campus housing after this date, but contracts must be returned with full payment for room and board charges for fall quarter. Housing information for the winter, spring, and summer quarters are generally forwarded to admitted students on a rolling basis beginning two months before the start of the quarter.
The housing office will take into account students receiving financial aid or those who are on the monthly payment plan when requiring full payment. If you have questions regarding housing including rules, regulations, or deposit guidelines they may be reached at housing@ohio.edu or by phone at 740-593-4090.
ORIENTATION
Precollege/Orientation
You must attend a day long orientation session before you can register for your first quarter classes. Transfer orientation is designed to provide information on college curricula, university general requirements, and campus resources. During orientation, you will take placement tests in English and math if you have not transferred in appropriate courses. You will also meet with faculty and student advisors from their college of enrollment. While registration is the primary goal of orientation, advisors also review University expectations and explain the code of conduct.
Paralleling the students' program, an orientation for parents provides them with the opportunity to meet with faculty and student advisors and ask questions pertaining to the Ohio University experience.
Orientation for students entering in the fall quarter is usually in July. Students will receive invitations in early to mid-June. Students who cannot attend on these dates can attend orientation the day before classes begin in September. Orientation for students who begin their studies in the winter, spring, or summer quarters is held the day before classes begin. During the summer quarter, student orientation is held before the start of each of the two five-week summer sessions.
If your final transcript will not arrive at Ohio University or be evaluated by your college before your orientation session, bring an unofficial copy of your transcript or grade slip with a course catalog to orientation. These items will allow your advisor to assist you with appropriate course selection. Some colleges may require a copy of the course syllabus to determine how a course taken elsewhere will match Ohio University vcourses.
I'm still enrolled in my current school, do I need to have a final transcript sent?
Final transcripts should be sent to us as soon as they become available. Once we receive these, any additional transfer work will be added to your record. A new transfer credit report with the additional work will be mailed to you approximately two weeks after we receive your final transcript. If the course has already been matched to Ohio University classes, that information will appear on the report as well. If it hasn't yet been evaluated, the college to which you've been admitted will review the course content and send you updated information as appropriate.
Final transcripts must be received by the third week of the first quarter in which you enroll at the University. If transcripts are not received by this time a hold will be placed on your record and you will be unable to register for future quarters.
BILLING
Ohio University uses an electronic billing system. The Office of the Bursar will send eBill notifications to the student Oak email accounts once they have registered. If you have returned a housing contract and deposit, you might receive a housing bill before you receive a tuition bill. All billings will reflect financial aid or the monthly payment plan option if that information has been provided to Ohio University prior to the billing date.
Your eBill will be generated approximately four to five weeks prior to the start of the term. Payment will be due two weeks prior to the start of the term. If your financial aid exceeds your quarterly tuition and fees, an overage check or direct deposit will be issued to you after the start of the quarter. Visit the Office of the Bursar web site for more information regarding billing, the billing schedule, payment options, the monthly payment plan option, and direct deposit.
