  • Aliens and AIDS in Southern Africa: The Malawi-South Africa Debate
Wiseman Chirwa

Between 1988-1992, about 13000 Malawian mine migrant workers were repatriated
from South Africa. The official reason given was that in the previous two years
some 200 of them had tested HIV/AIDS positive.

  • Children's Television in Ghana: A Discourse about Modernity
    Carla W. Heath

The central argument in this paper is that Ghanian children's television
programs are concrete realizations of a national discourse about culture for a
modern Ghanian. The principal themes in this discourse are that formal education
is to play a major role in a construction of a new national culture, to be strong,
that culture must draw upon the wisdom of the ancestors; to be relevant for
today, it must selectively draw upon and adapt ideas from outside Ghana.
