More than reading
Director Jeff Fantine points out that the Ohio University Literacy Center is unique in its mission to foster professional development, research, and the study of literacy in language in the University as well as the surrounding region.

2008 Research and Creative Activity Expo
Last year’s annual Student Research and Creative Activity Expo marked the largest exhibition of original student research, scholarship, and creative work to date.

Every day is “Earth Day” at OHIO’s ecohouse
In this three-minute video, Kate Hammond opens the doors of Ohio University’s ecohouse. Hammond is a graduate student in environmental studies and is one of three residents committed to demonstrating affordable, green technology and sustainable living.

Engineering better diabetes management
Sensors help people with diabetes by constantly monitoring and reporting blood sugar levels —but the sensors provide an overwhelming amount of information. So doctors at the College of Osteopathic Medicine are working with computer specialists from the Russ College of Engineering and Technology on a solution: artificial intelligence.

Ohio University’s history goes back to the early years of our nation.
Ohio University was founded by a Revolutionary War general who served under George Washington and a Renaissance man who boldly petitioned the Continental Congress for the land on which this institution was built. Sam Crowl, retired trustee professor of English, recounts more about OHIO’s distinguished legacy and the pioneering vision of our founders.

OHIO: Mark Phillips, D. Mus.
School of Music Professor Mark Phillips likes to compare the work of a composer to that of an architect — except, he says, “your medium is time, space, and vibration.” An internationally known composer, Phillips’ musical creations have been performed and honored throughout the United States and in Europe, South America, and China.

GLC: Experience of a Lifetime
One student says, “My college career would be completely different had I not joined the GLC.” Another remarks, “The GLC has helped in focusing my life’s goals.” A third marvels, “It’s an experience unlike any other.” So what exactly is the GLC besides an acronym for the Global Leadership Center? According to the Web site—ohio.edu/glc—it’s “more than a classroom, more than a club, more than a support group.” OK, but then what the heck is it? Simply put, the Global Leadership Center is an unparalleled two-year undergraduate certificate program that prepares students to think critically and creatively; communicate clearly and logically; embrace ambiguity and complexity; and understand the world’s challenging commercial, political, religious, and cultural issues. In other words, it’s the experience of a lifetime.

Hydrogen Fuel Announcement
Five years ago a scientist wrote a thermodynamic calculation on a piece paper and wondered about the possibilities. On August 2nd, 2007 she watched as officials signed a licensing agreement that will make that idea a reality. Gerardine Botte is an Associate Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering in the Russ College of Engineering and Technology. Her theory about an economical way to create hydrogen power has been successfully tested in the lab, and now American Hydrogen Power Corp. will take her research to the market place.

OHIO: The wonders of algae
Remember in high school biology class you learned about photosynthesis? That’s when plants use sunlight and carbon dioxide to create sugars. Photosynthesis is what inspired Ohio University researcher Ben Stuart to think about harnessing nature to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. His experiments led not only to an amazing way to reduce flue gases but also helped Stuart and his fellow researchers find a new energy source.

Mind Games: The STEAM Project
STEAM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math is a collaborative project between the Russ College of Engineering, the College of Education and area middle schools. This National Science Foundation funded program aims to improve science education in middles schools in Appalachia and provide a way to enhance communication skills among engineers. Six middle schools in Appalachia are participating in this program and this is just one example of how the program is working at Miller Middle School.

OHIO: Nanomedicine for the heart
Ohio University Distinguished professor Tadeusz Malinski's groundbreaking research is making a profound impact in the medical community. Dr. Malinski developed a nanosensor that allows researchers to study the role of nitric oxide in the regulation of critical body functions. This could help researchers better understand diseases like Parkinson's, Alzheimers, and heart disease.

SCALE: Universal art by John Sabraw and the aspect collective
An inside look at the visualization, production, and installation of SCALE, an astronomy-themed exhibition now on view at the Kennedy Museum of Art through December 15, 2007. The brainchild of Assistant Professor John Sabraw, SCALE was created by Sabraw and the Aspect Collective—a collaborative group of students, artists, scientists, and visionaries. Sabraw and Ohio University art students discuss their role in the exhibit, which includes a 10.5-by-85-foot charcoal drawing of the Milky Way galaxy.

A fuel of the future
In a time when gas prices are topping the three-dollar-a-gallon mark, it’s refreshing to know that researchers at Ohio University are contributing to the progress in developing more cost-efficient, environmentally friendly fuels. One such alternative fuel showing a great deal of promise is ammonia, and in Gerardine Botte’s lab, that technology is already working.

OHIO: A place to test tomorrow's fuels
Engineers at the Russ College of Engineering and Technology are collaborating with other departments on campus to find real solutions to energy and environmental concerns. One step in that process is the work of Associate Professor Greg Kremer, Ph.D. and his graduate students as they develop a vehicle that can test alternative sources of fuel.
