Behind the Music
School of Music Professor Mark Phillips likes to compare the work of a composer to that of an architect — except, he says, “your medium is time, space, and vibration.” An internationally known composer, Phillips’ musical creations have been performed and honored throughout the United States and in Europe, South America, and China.
This year, however, the honors come a little closer to home: Ohio University has named Phillips the 2007-08 Distinguished Professor, the university's highest academic honor, which carries a lifetime designation and recognizes scholarly accomplishment, professional reputation, and contributions to the university. This title commends his influence as an artist — and stands as a lasting tribute to the strong foundation of his musical works.
