Community Outreach

For nearly ten years, the Russ College has served as the local host for the MATHCOUNTS and TEAMS national competitions.

MATHCOUNTS is a national math enrichment coaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots involvement in every U.S. state and territory. Each year, we host approximately 100 students from area middle schools on the Athens campus to compete in this competition.

TEAMS is a one-day competition that helps area high school students learn how engineering touches almost every aspect of our lives. Questions, which represent first-year college engineering coursework, have dealt with such real-world engineering issues as air transportation, bridge design and rehabilitation, flood analysis, solar-powered vehicles and food preservation. Each year, we host approximately 150 students from area high schools on the Athens campus to compete in this competition.
