ABOUT US
Our Mission
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Center advances the diversity mission of Ohio University by creating a campus environment inclusive and supportive of sexual orientation and gender identity or expression. We focus on the unique academic, cultural, and social needs of LGBT students, and strive to enhance these students' learning and engagement as well as increase their retention. Our broader influence emerges from providing resources, educational opportunities, and social justice initiatives to all students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members at Ohio University and beyond.
Our Staff
Currently our staff is comprised of Mickey Hart, a graduate assistant and several student staff members. During some quarters, we welcome assistance from interns and practicum students. Learn more about our staff.
Our Programs
The Center offers a variety of educational and cultural programs and events throughout the academic year. Learn more about our programs or explore the CALENDAR page.
Our Education Projects
OHIO SafeZone: This project identifies a growing network of students, faculty, staff and community members who are willing and prepared to provide support and information to LGBT and questioning people. SafeZone members undergo a 2-hour training and get an OHIO SafeZone card to display.Several workshop dates are available each quarter. Register NOW!
SpeakOUT!: Our speakers’ bureau educates the campus about sexual orientation and gender identity through panel discussions in classes, residence halls, Greek houses, and other university and local settings. These 3-4 speaker panel presentations combine personal stories with educational information. Explore the SpeakOUT! page.
Our Resources
The Center's ever-expanding resource library contains great books, magazines, videos and newspapers on a variety of topics. We believe that it is always important to, "Educate yourself then educate others!" Explore the RESOURCES page.
Our Advocacy Efforts
The Center is a safe space on campus to seek confidential assistance and support. Dealing with discrimination, harassment, coming out concerns and relationship issues are just some of the areas where the Center can provide support and advocacy. We strive to continually improve the quality of life for LGBT people on campus and in Athens.
Our Outreach Efforts
The Center works to provide support to all students on campus. While much of our focus is on LGBT students, inclusive of those in the closet, out of the closet and somewhere in between, we also know that our straight allies and other non-LGBT people need support and attention too.
Our History
The Center was first established as a quarter-time operation in 1998 as part of the Division of Student Affairs' commitment to a just and diverse community. Through the effort of many, the Center became a full-time operation for the Fall of 2003. In the Fall of 2005, our staff size increased with the addition of our first graduate assistant.
Our Campus
Ohio University has worked to create a positive and open learning climate for all, including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students, faculty and staff. Learn more about Ohio University’s Discrimination and Harassment Policy, the Equal Employment and Educational Opportunity Policy, and the Harassment Policy Statement. In 2006, Ohio University was selected as one of the 100 best campuses for LGBT students by “The Advocate’s College Guide for LGBT Students.”
