"Although Crewson House is close to the College Green, people aren't generally familiar with its location," said David Descutner, interim executive vice provost. "The lack of familiarity with the building, along with the need to make more space available in Crewson for Institutional Equity and Disability Services needs, prompted a search for new quarters for the ombudsman." 

The new location of the office is in a light-traffic area of Baker Center, said Interim University Ombudsman Merle Graybill. "Members of the university community seeking assistance should feel comfortable with its location," Graybill said. "It is a private space off the beaten track."

Because the ombudsman's office consists of a single room staffed only by Graybill, individuals wishing to speak to her should make an appointment either by phone (740-593-2627) or e-mail (graybill@ohio.edu). Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and appointments can be made outside regular hours as needed.

The ombudsman serves as a source of information, referral and assistance in the resolution of concerns and critical situations for all members of the university community. In undertaking this role, the ombudsman adheres to the principles of independence, confidentiality, neutrality and informality.

"The ombudsman is an important contributor to the climate of our campuses," Descutner said. "We are fortunate that Merle, who has excellent qualifications for this position, was willing to take on these new duties. The new location will facilitate Merle's accessibility and her ability to work in a confidential manner."
