OHIO publications receive regional honors
Perspectives wins gold, Ohio Today wins silver in CASE awards program

Nov 3, 2009

Two Ohio University publications, Perspectives and Ohio Today magazines, were honored in this year's Pride of CASE V Awards program. The awards competition is sponsored by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). The awards competition is submission-based and gives recognition to institutions in the District V region of CASE, which includes Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.

"I think it is great recognition for our magazine," Andrea Gibson, editor of Perspectives, said. "It's great when our colleagues at the regional and national levels recognize us. I'm really excited about that."

Perspectives magazine won the gold medal for Excellence in Scientific Writing for the article "The Evolution of Discovery" by Andrea Gibson. The magazine has won at the regional level before, and won a silver medal for Visual Design in print for the article "Space Invaders" in 2008 at the national level.

Ohio Today won the silver medal in the Best Alumni/Institution Magazine category. The publication competed against other institutions with full-time enrollment of 10,000 or more within the category. This is the first time Ohio Today has been recognized as a publication, though it has received commendation for individual writing.

"It's a great honor to be recognized in our region for our work. It's a really competitive region, and what it really reflects is the quality of the team involved in producing Ohio Today. We have outstanding writers, student journalists and photographers and a really creative team that supports us here at the university," Mariel Jungkunz, editor of Ohio Today, said.

Ohio Today also has launched a redesigned version of the online magazine at www.ohiotodayonline.com to complement the print version of the publication. The Ohio Today Web site previously had PDF formats of their print editions available online, but the content of the new Ohio Today site will be more interactive, said Sarah McDowell, designer. She also said Ohio Today plans to continue to add to the multimedia elements of the new site.
