OHIO welcomes YAMATO: The Drummers Of Japan

Oct 27, 2009

Ohio University's 2009-10 Performing Arts Series will open with the energetic and moving performance of YAMATO: The drummers of Japan at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28, in the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.

YAMATO was first formed in Nara, Japan, in 1993 by Masa Ogawa. The talented group consists of ten members -- five women and five men -- each playing a different traditional Japanese instrument. Just a year after being formed, YAMATO had their first tour in China and Japan. Since 1994 they have had world tours with sold-out appearances and perform between 150 and 200 concerts every year.

Religion is a huge influence for YAMATO music. All of the pieces of music are made for the gods and spirits of their ancestors. Each member is able to show their own respect and admiration towards the gods in their music.

The members of YAMATO consider their music and expressions to be original. The main theme of the music is the exchange of human energy. This is heard through the heartbeat pounding of the drums.

Tickets for this performance may be purchased at the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium ticket office. The ticket office is open from noon to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and one hour before the show. Tickets can also be purchased online. For tickets or more information, please call 740-593-1780 or visit the Performing Arts Series Web site at www.ohio.edu/performingarts.
