Flu Facts: Vaccines

Oct 28, 2009

The following vaccines are expected to be available fall 2009:
  • Seasonal Flu Vaccine: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that students get vaccinated for seasonal flu; however, there is currently a shortage of this vaccine. At this time if you have a medical condition that puts you at increased risk if you get influenza (e.g. heart disease, asthma, kidney disease), or if you are pregnant or have a weakened immune system (e.g. long-term steroid treatment, cancer treatment, seizure disorders) please come to Hudson to see one of the medical providers. Our physicians and nurse practitioners are responsible for placing the order for the influenza vaccine. The cost of the vaccine is $25.

Information related to vaccine clinics for high-risk employees will be posted in Outlook.

We continue to work with our pharmaceutical vendor to determine when our additional vaccine doses will be shipped. At this time we do not have a shipping date, but have information that any additional doses will not be shipped until November. Should we receive additional doses of influenza vaccine you will be kept informed through Outlook.

  • H1N1 Vaccine: Ohio University has been designated a 2009 H1N1 receiving site. The vaccine will be shipped as it becomes available to the designated sites.
  • The university will hold its first vaccination clinic for priority group members of Ohio University students, faculty, staff and dependents from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1, at Nelson Dining Hall. Click here for more details.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has established target groups to receive the vaccine first. Once the demand for the target groups has been met, everyone should receive the vaccine.
