check firewall status

A firewall is hardware or software that helps to protect against intruders and worms by checking what connects to your computer and blocking some connection attempts if they are thought to be harmful.

To ensure that a Windows Firewall is active:

  1. Navigate to your Control Panel
  2. Double click the “Security Center” icon
  3. Under “Manage Security settings for:”, choose “Windows Firewall”
  4. If the “On” button is marked, the Windows XP Firewall is already active; if this isn't the case, click the "On" button to activate your system's firewall.

To ensure that a Mac OS X firewall is active:

  1. Click on the Apple and select System Preferences
  2. In System Preferences, double click Sharing
  3. In Sharing, click the Firewall tab:
    • If the firewall is turned off, click the Start button
    • To create a specific firewall rule, click “New” and enter the port name and numbers in the popup window.
